Transference and Countertransference can present challenges in treatment. How clinicians respond to these (or not) will impact the therapeutic relationship. However, the complexities of such phenomena may go undetected. This workshop will utilize various modalities to define and illustrate transference and countertransference, identify warning signs of such dynamics and strategies to address these in treatment. In addition, clinician and supervisory response for managing transference and countertransference will be explored.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define and recognize the clinical phenomena of transference and countertransference
  • Recognize the warning signs and identify the impact of transference and countertransference on the therapeutic relationship as well as treatment
  • Manage transference and countertransference more effectively in treatment in an effort to avoid treatment impasses or other negative consequences
  • Enhance clinical supervision or consultation by addressing these dynamics as they relate to professional development
