Music has been recognized as an effective component of nervous system regulation in the treatment of trauma. This presentation summarizes the research on music with children, teens, adults and families who have experienced trauma and describes the theoretical foundation for the role of music in the quest for a homeostatic state after trauma.  Participants will compare and contrast a variety of thoughtful applications of music-based strategies in a clinical setting. Participants will practice trauma-informed music-based interventions for children through older adults. Case vignettes will illustrate how music-making contributed to the healing of individuals and families who have experienced trauma.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate the benefits of rhythm, beat, melody, and harmony on the nervous system
  • Describe relevant information when designing a music-based intervention for a client who has experienced trauma
  • Summarize the role of lyrics, melody, harmony, rhythm, and beat as they relate trauma-informed practice with clients
