This workshop addresses the social, mental, physical, and sexual health trends experienced by LGBTQ+ youth, adolescents, and adults. Intersectional analysis highlights the additional health risks for QTPOC. subpopulations. Participants will also examine inequities experienced by such marginalized communities related to social and cultural factors that influence health and mental health issues disproportionately.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Summarize health trends affecting members of the LGBTQ+ community across the lifespan
• Discuss compounding health risks and systemic disparities that disproportionately drive health and mental health inequities within
marginalized LGBTQ+ communities.
• Formulate culturally responsive, affirming strategies to mitigate health disparities and better support the holistic well-being of
LGBTQ+ individuals.

This course “LGBTQ+ Health & Disparities” and the trainer, Tyree Oredein, DrPH have been approved by the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of NJ. This course, provided by Behavioral Health Matters, approval #403080626REC3s has been approved for 3 continuing education credit hours by the APCBNJ.  Credentials issued by the APCBNJ, the NJ Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners and the NJ Board of Social Work Examiners recognize such courses.  This 3 CE course is approved for social work continuing education hours in accordance with N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6.4c12.

Tyree Oredein, DrPH
Since 2005, Dr. Oredein (she/her/hers) has worked with the LGBTQ+ community (and other marginalized groups). Over the course of her career she has developed and delivered LGBTQ+ related professional development trainings to administrators, educators, health professionals, mental health and social service providers, and corporate personnel, among others. Notable recipients include NJ DHS; Division of Child Protection and Permanency; NJ Juvenile Detention Association; National Alliance on Mental Illness; and the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide. As a health educator she works closely with LGBTQ+ populations providing behavioral counseling. She served as a Special State Officer on the Healthy New Jersey 2030 Advisory Council under the auspices of the NJ Department of Health. Dr. Oredein is an Adjunct Professor at Montclair State University in the Department of Public Health, where she teaches the “Public Health Foundations” and “Ethics & Cultural Competency” courses. Dr. Oredein earned a Doctorate of Public Health (DrPH) from Rutgers University. She created Left Turn Village, a public health and social justice company in 2020.
