If “it takes a village to raise” children, how many are needed to protect them? Mandated reporters often include teachers, mental health professionals and other healthcare workers that must be able to recognize the overt and subtle signs of child abuse and neglect. Participants will examine the manifestations of child maltreatment and neglect along with the impact of ACEs and protective factors. This course summarizes the establishment of child protective services and issues today. Participants will review standards to manage and document situations that may warrant reporting and self-care.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss child protective services from a historical and current perspective.
  • Identify typical physical and behavioral signs of abuse or neglect exhibited by children.
  • Summarize procedures to follow when abuse or neglect is suspected and reported.
  • Describe the ethical duty of debriefing and self-care.
