This course examines the interplay between trauma and substance use. Regardless of which came first, both must be addressed to aid in the recovery process. Course begins with an overview of the social determinants of health (SDOH).  Participants will explore the relationship between the three realms of ACEs and SDOH and how both influence treatment. There is an emphasis on a trauma-informed perspective in treatment. Techniques and  resources are presented to support client’s special needs.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Define Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
• Summarize the 3 Realms of ACEs
• Discuss the correlation between ACEs and SDOH
• Describe the impact of trauma on mental health, substance use and the recovery process
• Discuss the significance of a trauma-informed perspective in treatment

Ana Guerra, LCSW, LPC, LCADC, CCS
Ms. Guerra, is a seasoned mental health professional with extensive experience in mental health and substance use disorders. She specializes in the treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders and Trauma. Ms. Guerra parlayed her clinical experience into a career as an adjunct/faculty member for various colleges and universities in NJ. She proposed, developed the curriculum and taught the Substance Use Disorder courses at Kean University’s Social Work Department. Ms. Guerra teaches across the Bachelor and Master level curriculum in Social Work and Addiction Studies which includes courses such as “Trauma” and “Psychopathology”. Ms. Guerra is approved by the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of NJ to teach initial and re-certification L/CADC courses. As a trainer for New Jersey Prevention Network, she served as an integral team member revising the CADC curriculum. Ms. Guerra facilitates training and consultation for various mental health, substance use and academic settings. She maintains a private practice and is also a Clinical Supervisor for a residential and outpatient treatment facility. In 2019, Ms. Guerra was selected by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to participate in the development of the CSWE’s Substance Use Curricular Guide which was published in 2020.  In 2021 & 2022, Ms. Guerra was approved by the APCBNJ as well as the NJ Alcohol and Drug Counselor Committee as a Mandatory Legal Class  Trainer.
